Public Participation Encouraged As Broward County Prepares Budget
Mayor Invites Broward Residents to Discuss Funding Issues
As Broward County Commissioners begin developing a budget for Fiscal Year 2007-08, the Mayor has set aside time at Commission workshops to allow comments from the public. In the past public comments were taken only at public hearings scheduled each year in September.
"This is the first time that the public will be invited to speak at a budget workshop. Residents should have a chance to tell us what’s important to them," said Mayor Josephus Eggelletion, Jr. "I want people to know what we're talking about early on in the process. We're making important financial decisions and I want to invite residents to come to these meetings and tell us what they think."
This year, Broward County has adopted a budget process based on Zero-Based Program Performance Outcomes. The new process evaluates every program and service offered by the County to determine whether it is necessary, economically feasible and whether it serves its intended purpose.
County Commissioners will conduct five budget workshops during the spring and summer. All workshops will be conducted in Room 430 of the Broward County Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale:
· March 27 10 a.m. Subject: Constitutional Officers/General Capital Program
Including the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Supervisor of Elections and Property Appraiser
· April 24 Noon Subject: General Fund Agencies*
· May 15 10 a.m. Subject: General Fund Agencies
· June 19 10 a.m. Subject: General Fund Agencies
· Aug. 21 10 a.m. Subject: Non-General Fund Agencies
The public is also encouraged to comment during two public hearings on the proposed budget on September 11 and 25. Both hearings will begin at 5:01 p.m., at the Governmental Center. The adopted budget will become effective October 1, 2007.
*Note – General Fund Agencies are funded with Property Tax dollars. For more information on subject matter covered in the General Fund workshops, visit www.broward.org.
